Diabetic retinopathy and hypertension: clinical and pathophysiological aspects of comorbidity and rational drug correction

Abstract

This article assesses the role of hypertension in the progression of diabetic retinopathy and possible rational therapeutic approaches, as well as features of the influence of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors being to reduce endothelial dysfunction. Review of the current literature confirms the importance and desirability of developing an effective method of drug correction and prevention of progression of diabetic retinopathy in hypertensive patients through the use of ACE inhibitors.
