Abstract

138 patients with diabetes mellitus registered in Novosibirsk Diabetes Registry were included in the study. Patients underwent standard clinical, laboratory and ophthalmological examination. The patients were divided into three groups: the first group – patients without diabetic changes of retina, the second group – patients with diabetic retinopathy, the third group – with diabetic macular edema on the background of diabetic retinopathy. The incidence of diabetic retinopathy with diabetic macular edema (DME) was 6.52 %. Patients with DME had long duration of diabetes (> 12 years), abnormalities of glucose and lipids metabolism and increased frequency of vascular complications. The results of the study create basis for the future research of risk factors and pathogenesis of diabetic retinal disease.
